I need help deciding

see, My family has owned a 1990 300e 1992 400se and a 2006 e350

so, Mercedes has been somewhat of a tradition in the family

but, now I need help deciding

but we're getting a new car, of my choice, and it's either

BMW 5 series or Mercedes E class

I choose these 2 because I don't want the car to be too small like the 3 series or C class but on the other hand I don't want a huge car like the 7 series or S Class

I want to know the amenities of both, the handling of both, the performance of both, and style of both

BMWs are ugly

You will look like a clown when you are driving a car that looks so ridiculous.
Mercedes is a brand for older, conservative drivers with too much money; BMW is a brand for younger, more aggressive drivers with too much money.

BMW is the sport brand that will get you there fast; Mercedes is the brand of reliability (just look at how much '80's Mercedes sedans still go for).

The amenities will be roughly the same; they're both luxury cars with equally outrageous pricetags.
I drove both cars many times.

With the newer ones, the BMW is more fun to drive and has a better look inside and out, but the Mercedes is safer, quieter, and smoother to drive.

You can't buy the leased car until the lease is over. In a sense you rent the car for a few years, then if you want it, you have to pay for it as though it were a used car. You could end up paying for the car for 8-9 years and the total could be much higher than if you bought it outright in the beginning. Plus your friend is taking you to the cleaners charging you $6000 up front to take over his lease. He probably only paid $2 or 3000 up front. The lowering may have voided the warranty or terms of the lease. You should run, not walk, from this deal.

This is a very bad idea for both of you. For one, you cannot buy a car on a lease. Everything would stay in his name and if this friend ever became an ex-friend he could screw you over big time. Bad for him because if you wreck the car and quit making payments he could be left holding the bag.

modifying a bmw will actually void the warranty. Plus with 10000 miles already? that car was abused. This is not a good deal. I would just go to the dealer and find me a new BMW with 0 miles and stock everything.

on the back of the clocks theres a electric box, when my clocks packed up in a 5 series it was that, l brought some replacement clocks plugged in all the wires,etc and it rectified the problem

Probably a dodgy electrical connection somewhere in the instrument pack. I do know that the SI board for the service indicator packs up on these cars sometimes. I think there's a battery in there too. Might be worth trying a BMW specialist, or a BMW forum like http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/
Amanda it sounds like possibly somebody has removed the dash clocks from the car and when they replaced it they did not connect the vacuum pipe of the rev counter back up.

mpg gauge should be operated by vaccum from the inlet manifold check for leaks..

What wheels will fit a 1987 E28 BMW 5 Series?

Just bought a 1987 E28 BMW 5 series to take part in a charity rally and but it needs some new tyres as existing wheels are old metric ones and tyres are a fortune. So we have decided it is probably just better to replace the wheels and tyres together with a used set off ebay. Problem is though I am lead to believe that not all 5 stud wheels will fit, and not even all original BMW 5 stud wheels.

So i need some advice..... what wheels can i buy to fit?

The standard size was a 6x14 wheel with 195/70/14 tyres, I had one. Some of the wheels from the E34 will fit, but not the wider 15" ones, as you'll run into arch clearance issues. Suggest you try one of the many BMW breakers yards you'll find up %26 down the country, as they'll always have wheels. Look at Google or Yellow Pages.

Any wheels from a E34 5 series, the one after yours, will fit. 7 and 8 series will fit, but there should be loads of E34 ones around.
