so, Mercedes has been somewhat of a tradition in the family

but, now I need help deciding

but we're getting a new car, of my choice, and it's either

BMW 5 series or Mercedes E class

I choose these 2 because I don't want the car to be too small like the 3 series or C class but on the other hand I don't want a huge car like the 7 series or S Class

I want to know the amenities of both, the handling of both, the performance of both, and style of both

BMW is the sport brand that will get you there fast; Mercedes is the brand of reliability (just look at how much '80's Mercedes sedans still go for).

The amenities will be roughly the same; they're both luxury cars with equally outrageous pricetags.

You can't buy the leased car until the lease is over. In a sense you rent the car for a few years, then if you want it, you have to pay for it as though it were a used car. You could end up paying for the car for 8-9 years and the total could be much higher than if you bought it outright in the beginning. Plus your friend is taking you to the cleaners charging you $6000 up front to take over his lease. He probably only paid $2 or 3000 up front. The lowering may have voided the warranty or terms of the lease. You should run, not walk, from this deal.

This is a very bad idea for both of you. For one, you cannot buy a car on a lease. Everything would stay in his name and if this friend ever became an ex-friend he could screw you over big time. Bad for him because if you wreck the car and quit making payments he could be left holding the bag.

modifying a bmw will actually void the warranty. Plus with 10000 miles already? that car was abused. This is not a good deal. I would just go to the dealer and find me a new BMW with 0 miles and stock everything.

Probably a dodgy electrical connection somewhere in the instrument pack. I do know that the SI board for the service indicator packs up on these cars sometimes. I think there's a battery in there too. Might be worth trying a BMW specialist, or a BMW forum like http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/
Amanda it sounds like possibly somebody has removed the dash clocks from the car and when they replaced it they did not connect the vacuum pipe of the rev counter back up.

Just bought a 1987 E28 BMW 5 series to take part in a charity rally and but it needs some new tyres as existing wheels are old metric ones and tyres are a fortune. So we have decided it is probably just better to replace the wheels and tyres together with a used set off ebay. Problem is though I am lead to believe that not all 5 stud wheels will fit, and not even all original BMW 5 stud wheels.

The standard size was a 6x14 wheel with 195/70/14 tyres, I had one. Some of the wheels from the E34 will fit, but not the wider 15" ones, as you'll run into arch clearance issues. Suggest you try one of the many BMW breakers yards you'll find up %26 down the country, as they'll always have wheels. Look at Google or Yellow Pages.

I have a 2000 BMW 328i, and the original factory subwoofer (2 piece) in the trunk. When the car is standing it plays fine, but once I start driving there is like a loud knocking sound. All the other speakers work fine. Does anybody know what the problem could be?

If it changes with engine RPM's, a noise filter(inductive type) or ground loop isolator may fix the problem.

I'm not sure what you mean by standing? With the engine on but the car not moving does it make this sound? My first guess is to check your spark plug wires. This sounds like a suppression problem. If your spark plug wires are old or one is loose then you will sometimes pick up a popping in your audio. Make sure that your subs are to the frame (probably not the reason).

First of all I'm a little skeptical of the mechanic. If the symptoms described are accurate, and the car cranks, then it's not the battery. The battery only turns the engine over. The alternator doesn't have anything to do with the starting of the car. The alternator merely recharges the battery when the engine is running.

I doubt if it was the spark plugs since plugs last for quite a while and worn plugs will give other signs (poor performance, bad gas mileage, etc) before refusing to start the car.

There can be any number of things wrong. Yes it might be a fuel pump. But pumps are expensive and you should be pretty sure this is the problem before replacing something that's probably good. The MAS might be faulty. Could also be the VANOS. Or a loss wire.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but trying to diagnose an auto problem over the internet is difficult.

But again, you might want to seek out another BMW mechanic.

I agree with snoiwe on all of these problems and would like to add that there are a few more things you need to worry about on the newer models mostly electrical in nature. The consumer database shows many owners reporting probelms with the central computer module which is alays needing upgrades or replacement. This module controls just about everything electrical in the vehicle and when it fails, good bye transportation. Interestingly, statistically speaking, the 1999 models and older where more reliable than the newer models today. The most reliable were the 1980-1988 models but I doubt you want to go that old.

However, I would like to point out that the reason BMW swtiched to the Hydramatic transmssions from GM was because they were 100% reliable whereas the trans they used before were alwasy breaking down. As you can see, Wetsombereo does not know whay he/she is talking about- ZF is made by ZF Friedrichshafen AG, a German company which has had many problems. BMW has had no problems with the GM transmission.

I would advise you to avoid this vehicle and go with something more reliable. The 2003 Lexus IS300 is a great soild car. It drives excellent and is of course very reliable. Its about the same size. The only downside is some find the styling to be 'boy racer' compared to more classy models.

It is not worth it, the intake necessary for it sucks in a ton of water. If you live anywhere it rains the intake on those suck. I would talk to your local Dinan guy is you want specifics. I was going to do it but it rains too much where I live. My friend suggested against it and he is a master tech for BMW.

Major difference is the engine. 318 is a 1.8 four-clyinder making 138hp and 125 torque. The 325 is an inline 6 putting out 189hp and 184 torque.

The 318 does not have the option for leather seats, however if you wanted them bad enough you could swap the interior from a 325.

Cruise control is only optional in the 318, while standard in the 325.

No tilt steering.

The sedan 318 in 1994 didn't have alloy wheels.

Everything else is pretty much the same.

My advice is for the 325, if you get the 318 you will be wishing you got the 325 down the road.

Of course the major difference will be inside the car, the 325i has leather seats, also the doors linning, the suspension is different. Both cars have the same length, some of the 318 has sun roof and it comes with on board computer. But go for the 325i if u can.

The getrag transmissions that bmw puts in are usually very reliable... Is it a manual or auto? If its a manual, the tranny will outlast the car, the automatics are a crap shoot. The good thing is that the transmissions for that car are readily available and dont cost too much. If you do get it and it does go out, dont rebuild, just buy a low milage one... Ive checked on pricing for my other car (nissan xterra), and unless its just a single gear, it gets to be more than buying another used tranny.

Does it slip? If so, then bad... Does it make a lot of noise or shift really violent/sharply? Then bad... Use common sense, you are buying an old car, and that is a risk you will have to look at...

Bimmers tend to be a lot safer than many other cars on the road. I guess for the price you pay initially though they should be, but I think the reasoning behind them being safer cars is the metal used to make them. Some of the Japanese car companies like Honda, Toyota etc use recycled metal to make their vehicles, BMW does not its pure, making things stronger and tougher upon impact. As someone else said Volvo does the same thing making them very safe as well.

Your car pulled water into the engine. Be glad that your engine hasnt seized up. You need to let it dry out. Keep AAA's number on had because it could still seize if you run it with water inside it. Be careful and stay off the highway till you get this fixed. I would recommend going to your BMW dealership and have them check it out (If youre under warrenty). Otherwise take it to a garage if youre not very automotive saavy.
sounds like U either got water in the engine, which is not good, or just water in the exhaust, hope for the latter

check the oil and see if its a creamy color that can be an indicator of water in the oil/ engine if it has then get the oil changed and let the car run till all the water has cooked off,run at low revs, when it stops smoking, change the oil and filter again

Other than trying new battery and resoldering the pcb where the buttons are attached.

Not a lot more can be done.
It needs a new battery but you only have 15 seconds from removing the old one to replace it or it will need to be reprogrammed by the dealer with a DIS machine.
