so, Mercedes has been somewhat of a tradition in the family

but, now I need help deciding

but we're getting a new car, of my choice, and it's either

BMW 5 series or Mercedes E class

I choose these 2 because I don't want the car to be too small like the 3 series or C class but on the other hand I don't want a huge car like the 7 series or S Class

I want to know the amenities of both, the handling of both, the performance of both, and style of both

You can't buy the leased car until the lease is over. In a sense you rent the car for a few years, then if you want it, you have to pay for it as though it were a used car. You could end up paying for the car for 8-9 years and the total could be much higher than if you bought it outright in the beginning. Plus your friend is taking you to the cleaners charging you $6000 up front to take over his lease. He probably only paid $2 or 3000 up front. The lowering may have voided the warranty or terms of the lease. You should run, not walk, from this deal.

Just bought a 1987 E28 BMW 5 series to take part in a charity rally and but it needs some new tyres as existing wheels are old metric ones and tyres are a fortune. So we have decided it is probably just better to replace the wheels and tyres together with a used set off ebay. I'm not sure what you mean by standing? With the engine on but the car not moving does it make this sound? My first guess is to check your spark plug wires. This sounds like a suppression problem. If your spark plug wires are old or one is loose then you will sometimes pick up a popping in your audio. Make sure that your subs are to the frame (probably not the reason).

First of all I'm a little skeptical of the mechanic. If the symptoms described are accurate, and the car cranks, then it's not the battery. The battery only turns the engine over. The alternator doesn't have anything to do with the starting of the car. The alternator merely recharges the battery when the engine is running.

I doubt if it was the spark plugs since plugs last for quite a while and worn plugs will give other signs (poor performance, bad gas mileage, etc) before refusing to start the car.

There can be any number of things wrong. Yes it might be a fuel pump. But pumps are expensive and you should be pretty sure this is the problem before replacing something that's probably good. The MAS might be faulty. Could also be the VANOS. Or a loss wire.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but trying to diagnose an auto problem over the internet is difficult.

But again, you might want to seek out another BMW mechanic.

I agree with snoiwe on all of these problems and would like to add that there are a few more things you need to worry about on the newer models mostly electrical in nature. The consumer database shows many owners reporting probelms with the central computer module which is alays needing upgrades or replacement. This module controls just about everything electrical in the vehicle and when it fails, good bye transportation. Interestingly, statistically speaking, the 1999 models and older where more reliable than the newer models today. The most reliable were the 1980-1988 models but I doubt you want to go that old.

However, I would like to point out that the reason BMW swtiched to the Hydramatic transmssions from GM was because they were 100% reliable whereas the trans they used before were alwasy breaking down. As you can see, Wetsombereo does not know whay he/she is talking about- ZF is made by ZF Friedrichshafen AG, a German company which has had many problems. BMW has had no problems with the GM transmission.

I would advise you to avoid this vehicle and go with something more reliable. The 2003 Lexus IS300 is a great soild car. It drives excellent and is of course very reliable. Its about the same size. The only downside is some find the styling to be 'boy racer' compared to more classy models.

It is not worth it, the intake necessary for it sucks in a ton of water. If you live anywhere it rains the intake on those suck. I would talk to your local Dinan guy is you want specifics. I was going to do it but it rains too much where I live. My friend suggested against it and he is a master tech for BMW.

Major difference is the engine. 318 is a 1.8 four-clyinder making 138hp and 125 torque. The 325 is an inline 6 putting out 189hp and 184 torque.

The 318 does not have the option for leather seats, however if you wanted them bad enough you could swap the interior from a 325.

Cruise control is only optional in the 318, while standard in the 325.

No tilt steering.

The sedan 318 in 1994 didn't have alloy wheels.

Everything else is pretty much the same.

My advice is for the 325, if you get the 318 you will be wishing you got the 325 down the road.

The getrag transmissions that bmw puts in are usually very reliable... Is it a manual or auto? If its a manual, the tranny will outlast the car, the automatics are a crap shoot. The good thing is that the transmissions for that car are readily available and dont cost too much. If you do get it and it does go out, dont rebuild, just buy a low milage one... Ive checked on pricing for my other car (nissan xterra), and unless its just a single gear, it gets to be more than buying another used tranny.

Bimmers tend to be a lot safer than many other cars on the road. I guess for the price you pay initially though they should be, but I think the reasoning behind them being safer cars is the metal used to make them. Some of the Japanese car companies like Honda, Toyota etc use recycled metal to make their vehicles, BMW does not its pure, making things stronger and tougher upon impact. As someone else said Volvo does the same thing making them very safe as well.

Your car pulled water into the engine. Be glad that your engine hasnt seized up. You need to let it dry out. Keep AAA's number on had because it could still seize if you run it with water inside it. Be careful and stay off the highway till you get this fixed. I would recommend going to your BMW dealership and have them check it out (If youre under warrenty). Otherwise take it to a garage if youre not very automotive saavy.

check the oil and see if its a creamy color that can be an indicator of water in the oil/ engine if it has then get the oil changed and let the car run till all the water has cooked off,run at low revs, when it stops smoking, change the oil and filter again

Other than trying new battery and resoldering the pcb where the buttons are attached.

Not a lot more can be done.
It needs a new battery but you only have 15 seconds from removing the old one to replace it or it will need to be reprogrammed by the dealer with a DIS machine.

The dealer can open it. If you really just want the contents, use a dent puller and bust open the lock cylinders.

The advantage of using the dealer is taht will it will preserve the lock pins. The cases can then be sold or re-keyed.

Try a good locksmith. Check the Better Business Bureau to make sure they are OK. I have an old 73 Honda that had no key or title. Locksmith came and made an ignition key for me. Hope it is not a problem.
Call a locksmith or use a BFH. ( Big Frickin Hammer )
A locksmith should be able to open the locks,if not you may have to drill the locks out and buy new ones from either BMW or a locksmith.

The X5 is actually a computer controlled 4 wheel drive. Although power is typically transferred to the rear wheels under normal conditions, the traction control system of the car (Called DSC for Dynamic Stability Control) monitors the speed of each wheel individually. No. It was never available in europe, so you can't even get the engine computer to talk to the transmission computer. The SMG transmission can't handle the additional torque of the 5.0L V8 on the E39 M5. The E46 M3 has less power and MUCH less torque, so it works. The 2005 M5 has a V10 engine and totally different electronics from the E39 chassis. Also the SMG III in the new M5 is a seven speed unit which is dimensionally different from your transmission.

I think the BMW is a better car, it has better looks than all Audi's and performs great. I own a 325xi and it performes great in the snow. The only problem with the BMW's are when they have a mechanical problems, they are big. My sunroof had something crumpled in it,they had to take out the sunroof and the ceiling of the car to replace the visor that was crumpled. I was fine with it because it was all under warranty. If you do buy the BMW, if you want to go to the best BMW dealer, BMW of Towson. It is in Towson, Maryland and is one of the biggest BMW dealers on the east coast. They have good service and great prices. The rental cars they have are wonderful, They give you a choice of a car or an SUV or minivan. The car they will give you is a 3-series with less than 10,000 miles on it, the truck they give you is an X5 and the van is a Grand Caravan with leather interior.

hi - i'm a bmw tech. you'll need special tools, crank pin, cam blocks. 1st you need to get crank set at #1. we do this by inserting crank pin into flywheel located just under the starter. then cams need to be set at #1. turn each cam so the first lobe is facing upwards. this will be enough to install head onto the block. once installed you will need the cam blocks to set the timing. they fit on the rear of the cams. once in place install chain. then tighten gears. and you will be good. if you don't set the timing with blocks it will run rough. if your good you can do it with your eye. then take to the dealer and have them set.

you are in luck I sold cars! take the price of the car, lets say 35,000. Take the 350 and multipy by two. that is your monthly payment on a 60 month finance with no money down. Plus or minus of course if the term is longer or the interest is higher. same principal with car payments. If the desired payment is 350 dollars, divide that number by two, tack two zeros on the end, price of car is 17,500. To get into a BMW for 350, you need to lease for a 24 month term.

I just bought a used 2004 325i with gray leather. It feels so "rough" and not smooth. The leatherette is bumpy and "sticky" and tough. You probably have that in your car, you can check by looking at the production codes in the glove box and asking someone at a bmw dealership if you have leather or leatherette. They may also be able to pick up the build from the vin.

Good question, I used to own an E39 540i (wasn't all wheel drive). The car handled beautifully in the snow with Micheline alpine snow tires and this was in Duluth, MN.

If you have a 535i you should be fine if you're used to driving a rear wheel drive car, just get some good winter tires for that season and you'll be great.

If you ever get stuck, simply switch off the DSC or drive the car in "half mode" from the start.

I own a 1997 BMW 318i, I purchased it new and I love BMW. It really is the ultimate driving machine, and I bought almost the cheapest one at the time. I had three problems with it all fixed under the warranty. Catalytic converter when out , the ignition switch broke and the brake lights switch also broke. They all happened in the first two years I had the car. After that, I have had no more problems with it. I still have it and love it. It still drives the same as the first day I took it out of the dealer, now it has 130K miles on it. Right now I drive a company car with everything pay for so I don't need to buy a car, but I am keeping my BMW, and I am definitely buying another BMW next time I decide to buy another new car.

The "Clown Nose" does not normally blink unless you install the alarm module. However this is actually a software setting in the car's computer and not controlled by the alarm module. If you ask nicely you may be able to get your dealer to reprogram your car to blink when you lock the doors.

the e90(06 and on 3 series) can not blink unless you have a alarm. the older 3 series(e46) can be set to blink w/o an alarm by programming vehicle at dealer.

Mercedes has more class, but they have proven to be less reliable and have been stripped of there Germen heritage witht he DaimlerChrystler merger, and the 745 is just downright beautiful, and BMWs are way more popular the the Benzes. At 24, however, you must have one nice job to afford either, even if it is used.

This is a total guess, but I doubt the ones in 2001 moved as you turned the steering wheel. The current Xenon headlights move and track the road and self level at night. During the day they are fixed.

The make of the car has nothing to do with the price to fix the dent. It depends of the quality of job you want. The problem is usually they have to paint the whole piece, not just the dent. For example a dent on a door calls for painting the whole door, which is smaller than say the trunk lid. The piece you mention may be a good size. If they just paint around the dent it will be noticeable. It won't look good.

I would say yes, but no. I had a 1992 325i, and a 1994 325i and had BIG time problems with the electrical, and automatic transmissions. But I loved to roll In It givin the space you have and just pain simple the ride Itself. The Chevrolet Is VERY stuffy and small Inside on-top of the never ending dash-board and tiny foot space In the rear. The good side of the Z28 Is the the "Go Straight" power over the BMW. Also a hard motor to work on. Just because Its American made doesn't mean It easy to work on. My advise Is to keep the BMW. Once you get the camaro, you won't be trading that car to nobody. First who is trading what? If you have the Camaro and are trading for the BMW then read on, if not keep the BMW! Even with the 3 year difference (%26 if the BMW is in good shape - exterior %26 interior) the BMW is worth more money then your Camaro. Have an import repair shop do a pre-purchase inspection on the BMW to make sure you are not biting off more then you can chew.

well you can get the model with inline six twin turbo. 300+ hp in a relatively small car. Talk about possible e46 m3 killer Ooohh, that sounds so nice, and fast. Plus it will have something the last m3's never had lots of torque. That is the 135i. It will feature the new 335i engine. The base is a inline 6 with 230hp. And let's keep our fingers crossed for BMW to make a M1.

i agree. another engine option is the current 328 engine (which is the same 3.0L engine as the 335i but without the twin turbo... ) however its overly pricey and to be able to drive in spring you better book it 2-3 months ahead of time!
The 135i will be about the same price as the 328i base model, so, you're looking at mid 30k. As for the convertibles, you can expect them to be around 5k more. They will be delivered to the U.S. on March 22nd. So start looking for them at your local dealership around the end of March, early April. I know several people that have already ordered them. So, if you are wanting one, you should probably go ahead and get one ordered and on hold, otherwise, the ones that are coming into the dealerships are probably already sold, or will sell the same day they get there, because there are so many people that want one. The 128 will have the same engine as the 328 and the 135 will have the same twin turbo engine as the 335. I suggest you go test drive a two door version of either of those if you want before you order a 1 series. The 1 series will be about 200 lbs lighter than their 3 series counter parts. The convertibles, a little lighter than that. I think everyone else covered the other stuff.

I have a 1989 535i with 188k on the odometer and it is quite a good car. The 3.5 liter engine is built for longevity by having a high nickel alloy engine block and a forged steel crankshaft. The engine is said to be good for 300k and I think they are right.

My family has always had BMWs. We had 2 Audis at one point and will never go back. Currently we have a 2007 X5, a 2007 328i, a 2004 325i, a 2004 530i, and a Porsche. BMWs have occasional problems, but they are mostly with the first model year of a vehical. For $8000 or less you could probably find a mid-90s 3 series or or 5 series. I've had a '98, 318i for 4 years now, I've put 70k miles on it. The car has been great, with occasional problems with the A/C, and just replaced the exhaust. I would say that over all the cost I have incurred is about $1500 a year. But overall a great car, I hope it runs forever.

Have you found the ecu? It's under the hood on the passenger side.

Once you open the black cover you can remove the ecu. Then you have to take the metal cover off and you'll see the circuit boards. Replace the stock chip on the board with your new one.
