For Audi and BMW owners : How would you rate your car's reliability compared to Japanese cars?

I guess it helps if you've owned a Japanese car before but yeah... I just love the styling and performance of Audis and BMW cars but always hear /read about reliability issues. Is this really true?

I had both and I like the German cars better. Simple is elegant, on the Japanese side is more of more gadgets is luxury. I am not the type of person that gets lost easy and needs a Nav system to go to the grocery store. One thing that I noticed is no too many people knows how to deal with Euro Imports so is hard to find a good tech.

Looking back about the 70s and 80s during the fuel crisis. The Japanese cars got their big break. The Euro cars were too expensive and left for the wealthy to buy. I remember in High School we moded the Honda CVCC (aka Cvic) since was a cheap car to obtain and was like a toy and cheap on gas. That gained popularity among my generation and learned how these cute little toys worked. Euro imports for their price, you could bought 3 Hondas, so they were left to Rich folks that does not give a dam on how that works and have the money to maintain and repair. Still Japanese cars were expensive to fix but at the mid range. US build suffered a heavy punch during those dark ages but their were cheaper to fix, Euro cars again, expensive as heck to fix and maintain. So the choice was obvious, most people looked at Japan for cars. So now you see what we have. But anybody that had the chance to drive a Datsun or a Mazda or a Toyota or a Mitsubishi they know they were not even closed to High Performance. You had to live during those days to understand what is out there now.

Does a 2000 BMW 323ci need premium gas?

I have a 2000 BMW 323ci and premium gas in my area hit $3.50/gallon. Do I really need it or can I switch to mid-grade?

Does a 2000 BMW 323ci need premium gas?computer protection

check your manual; it'll give you the minimum grade "allowed" for your car. you can maybe get away with mid-grade if it's good quality.

adam r is completely incorrect. The different grades of gasoline dictate their octane rating. Use the wrong octane for what your engine was designed for causes knocking. Follow your manual! Report It

I'm thinking the price difference isn't great enough to risk the performance and maintenance. If you chose to lower the grade, definitely look in the manual first. It will define the grade by the octane level.

Here's a manual

http://www.bmwtips.com/ownersManuals/200...

See page 27. It does say to use premium.
yeah!...car will last longer
try mid level...but ur car will get less performance and less mpg...
It doesnt matter, all gas is the same. None of it gets any better gas mileage or is any cleaner for your car. Here recently there was a gentleman an TV that's been in the research of gas for many years and he stated this. Buying higher priced gas is like buying higher priced clothes. No one pair of jeans is really better than the other but most want the expensive kind to make them feel better. Same with gasoline. Buy cheap!!

Nitrous on a BMW??

Hello, I am looking for a Nitrous Kit to Install on a 1994 BMW 325 IS. Im having no luck with e-bay or local shops In my town. Can anyone help. Im from Yonkers next to the Bronx borderline. Thanks...... Also, anyone have an Idea what HP numbers I'll make with about 100 shot...Bottz

Nitrous on a BMW??computer repair

Not a good idea. You cannot squeeze another 100hp out of the engine without extensive changes to the internals.

You can get over 200 at the wheels without much work on this car. Get yourself a good intake, chip, exhaust, OBD2 midpipe, under drive pulleys and you will see 200hp.

You could even do M3 cams and a 3.5 MAF and make a bit more.

Remember, this car needs all it's maintenance first. Replace your bushings, cooling system, and anything else you may need before upgrading. Also the car is much lighter than the M3 and with a good suspension set up can drive circles around one. Honestly, I miss my 325 it felt so planted going into turn 1 at PIR...

There is a good reason for that, it isn't a good idea. It wouldn't even be a good idea with an M3. Forget about the gas and just build out to the M configuration as best you can with he stock engine and be satisfied with it. It's too good of a car to ruin with a bogus tuning.
it is possible to do nitrous on that engine, just not a 100 shot, if i were you id do a 50 shot of DRY nitrous. dry is safer for stock engines

Top of 1998 BMW 5 Series?

From expirence can you pls tell me which 1998 BMW 5 Series is most reliable less problems. And which one is the worst

Top of 1998 BMW 5 Series?computer security

If you are looking for reliablility, don't buy a BMW in the first place; however, I have not seen any studies to convince me that one 5-series model is more reliable than another. The 1998 (E39 chassis) was the last year before the third generation M5 was realeased as a 1999 model. The best 1998 model would be the 540i, with a 286 horsepower 4398 cc (4.4 litre) V8, it outpowered the measly 528 which only had 193 horsepower. The 1998 was availible with a 6-speed manual trasmission (or a 4-speed slushbox). If you are in the market for a 1998 5-series, reliablilty is irrevelent because no 5-series is truly a reliable car so just buy the best prerfoming car (540i) and don't give a second thought to lesser cars such as the 528i.

BMW 528i with manual transmission

M50 series of engines are more reliable than V8 M60. Less problems are expected and is easier to repair.

For that year, your other choice is 540i.
528i with Sports Package would be my pick.

The M52 (6 cylinder) engine platform has been very successful across the model range and has been highly regarded by reviewers; and even won various awards.

Just on the basis of fewer movng parts, the inline 6 engines would be more reliable and cheaper to maintain than the V8 engine.
520i ofcourse

Percentage to negotiate BMW pre-owned car?

I plan to buy a certified pre-owned 2004 Z4 within the next few weeks. Most of the cars that I'm finding at dealerships are listed around $29,000.

Since I'm paying cash/check, what is a realistic figure to negotiate off this price? Is 10% too much/little?

Most of the cars are lease returns with a trade-in value around $23k. Should I aim for a final price in the $25k-$26k range?

Thanks for your help. Not sure if BMW negotiates like other used car dealers.

Percentage to negotiate BMW pre-owned car?computer virus

all used car dealers negotiate the same

expect to spend a long time at the dealership in order to get a good price.. if the car you are looking for is a car that is hard to find, expect to pay at least $2000 more for it than what they got it for.. if it is a car that is more easily found, and there are a lot of dealerships in the area that have similar ones, you can get away with paying about $1000 more for it

one thing you can do is to ask to see the paperwork on it.. they wont always show it to you, and if they dont, you should say thanks and start walking out of the dealership.. trust me, theyll stop you before you take two steps

but the paperwork will show you what they bought it for, what they put into to get it checked out, and anything else they spent on it.. and then just negotiate what price youre going to pay over it

That's true, you will only get it after you beat Razor on 5 stages which i didn't find hard. I bet him using the Mercedes McLaren. However, what's surprising me is that it's racing you, that doesn't make sense.

not sure y it's racing you, but if it's THE bmw (from the begining of the game) then you won't get that one till you beat the #1 on the blacklist.

I drove BMWs for the last 14 years whilst living in Germany (although they were all 323i) but I'd say go for the BM, unless you really want to go off road, in which case don't buy an automatic! Actually, don't buy any automatic! Apart from that, your fuel costs will be a lot less with the BM, and if you look after it (regular oil change, occasional Dealer service) it'll give you years of driving pleasure, and probably hold its value better than the Nissan.
I'd have the BMW every time.It looks better, handles better, and is a lot more economical.Unless you really like the look of the Nissan or want to go offroad or towing,Beemer every time.Manual gearboxes are usually less prone to faults too.
