The local Catholic Bishop drives a 5 series BMW. Can some Catholic here please defend/explain the reason for this, as couldn't he sell it, drive a smaller car and give the money to the poor like Jesus would have asked?

Its not an isolated case. Here where I live in the Philippines the nuns and priests (small case on purpose) drive new cars, take the airplane, and have pictures taken of themselves playing the slot machines at the casino while their parishioners dress in rags and take public transportation. So much for a vow of poverty. Mother Teresa is rolling over in her grave.

Might as well. The money that the parrish is taking in must be good, the mortgage is paid off and he can get it taxfree.
Why not enjoy the benefits of faithful tithes.
Because those in charge of the Catholic Church are not nearly as big a bunch of suckers as their parishioners....
He could sell it and drive a smaller car and give the money to the poor, of course.
I don't know anything about cars, but I do know that a lot of people have a weakness for flashy vehicles. This bishop may be one of them -- he's only human, of course. He has weaknesses just like you or I do.
