i am curious if a 7 series bmw(like a "96 740) can be converted to a manual trasmission. if it can what transmission should be used, where do you get it, and how can you get it done? will the manual transmission from like a 540i or an M5 work?

I am no mechanic and don't know the technical specification.. but still it seems a little absurd to me.
If you already have the car... well sell it and get yourself a M5 of a similar price.
If you haven't acquired it yet.... well don't
Get the car as it came from the factory, seems really irrational to convert a car in which so much technology has been invested to make it a perfect automatic car... for a manual made by some car shop. My advice: Don't throw your money to the garbage.

It is not possible to convert it to a manual transmission.
It's possible because i know someone who purchased an 06 Bmw 645i convertible and the previous owner changed the transmission from auto to manual and it's possible...
I have a '00 E38 and I do not think this is possible. Although the euro versions did have a manual transmission on the E38. If you could find a euro model it could have a manual transmission. Converting your existing 7 series would be difficult considering that the computer takes a lot into account for gear shifting and for the fuel mixture.

It is definitely possible. But it would be a very complicated and very expensive undertaking to do it right. It's not just a question of dropping out the transmission and popping in a new one. There are all kinds of other parts that are linked to it and the way the computer is set up. It would truly cost so much money to do, you'd be better off simply trading it for a manual car.
