try putting a towel over it in the mornings
Sounds like a fault with either the ECU's cold starting programme, or a fault with the cold start injector itself, which on a fuel injection engine performs the same function as a choke on a carburretor car, i.e. briefly puts more fuel into a cold engine for the first few minutes of running.

A trip to a BMW dealer might seem an expensive way of curing the fault, but their diagnostic equipment will pinpoint the fault immediately, possibly saving you money replacing components that don't need replacing.
Have they changed the oil? This helped mine!
I had a simmilar experience it was the alternator, I was surprised but when they changed it it was ok.It was only pushing out 12.5 volts enough for it to run when warm but not when cold.
hi there

I've had this problem on a late 51 plate i changed the ecu temp sensor to cure it

if you have a set of spanners its not a hard job but make sure the engine is cold
I'm not sure but I have the same problem (also 02 325). Just sounding a bit rough and occasionally not turning over properly....

Same issue for me - nothing diagnosed and no fault light on dash....
