Before you spend good money on this car, check that you don't have this problem.
It is a common failure to many 2000 323 and 328 cars.

It seems likely that if you do not have this problem now, you WILL have it later. Especially if you're thinking about putting more power to the engine (more torque - more stress at the weak point).
It's a good idea to reinforce the weak point before you start any mods on the car. Turner Motorsports sells the reinforcement kit.
Well, once you've addressed the problem, you may look at upgrading various parts of the car. Turnet Motorsports website has a bunch of upgrade ideas.

A cold air intake, exhaust (remus, UUC), and chip might get you 15 hp. That's over $2000 though, BMWs are hard to get HP out of because they come out of the factory maximized for performance. If you want VERY dramatic results, super/turbo chargers will get you 40-60% of a HP increase, but will run you 4 or 5k.
