Volvo XC-90 vs. BMW X3?

My dad is trying to decide which of the cars he sould buy. Do you prefer a Volvo or BMW and why?

I think if your Father read the history of Volvo and BMW in either case both manufacturers will make a compelling case for the brand. The one fella who is a parts manager for Volvo has a unique credibility to criticize Volvo. If I had to choose, I would look at the entire body of work for the brand. Despite ownership, problems occur, in the car arena it is known as "good and bad years for a brand". You will find this to be true for Exotics and all the way down the food chain, continuous improvement is a good trait, a car company making the same mistake over and over again is plain stupid.

Some Chap mentioned looking at the Mazda CX7, now that might be worth looking into. A Mazda is not as well built as a Volvo, it is not as robust. They have two different missions. Volvo has built a reputation for gas powered cars that can perform for a million miles. They go as far as to have a million mile club. The craftsmanship in a Volvo is on an entirely different plane than Mazda. This doesn't make Mazda less than, it is a brand that is more suited for the "Sporty set" versus a million miles.

I think the BMW is a good vehicle, very performance oriented and a benchmark in the industry. A BMW is a finicky piece of machinery that needs to be fine tuned and then it will work beautifully. It is a pay attention to detail kind of vehicle, that endears itself to the owner who appreciates the premium of how you get there, and how fast. Fast is key.
