Replacing starter on 1984 BMW?

I may be buying an old 1984 BMW 733i. Owner says it needs a new starter. Apparently it turns over and starts but dies as soon as the key is released. I know very little about cars. Does it sound like a bad starter and if so how much will it cost to replace?

Also, as long as I'm here, it needs a new muffler as well. Do they run around $150 like the guy told me?

If the car does not stay running after you release the key there may be more than he is telling you. Always remember buyer beware. He does not have to tell you everything.

If you cannot hear the car run and drive it then, I would pass.

I would pass this car. if you don't know much about cars, 20+ years old car would not be my choice.

If the car cranks strong with full battery, the starter is working fine. In other words. the car starts, but stalls as soon as you let go of the key. This could be problem with the ignition system or could be a massive air leak in the intake system. Could also be problem with ECU (like crank position sensor, throttle position sensor) or fuel injection system.

New muffler would run around $150 for this car, but also takes an hour of labor to install. so it should take about $250 - $300 unless you can do it yourself.

All BMW use Behr plastic radiator. The first thing you need to do is replace that radiator. The plastic neck would snap anytime after 8 years of service. Also that M30 engine has problem with Oil bolts coming off of cylinder head. You should open the valve cover, and take the oil bots out, and put it back with loctite. The BMW dealer actually sells the replacement bolts with loctite already on it.
