Going from a Japanese, front-wheel-drive sedan (Maxima) to a luxury, rear-wheel-drive sport sedan (BMW 5 Series) is a big change.

The biggest difference you will notice is that the BMW is powered by an inline six cylinder engine, which is known for its refinement and smoothness. Also, in some of J.D. Power and Associates studies, BMWs have been dinged for confusing control systems. Be prepared to read and re-read the owners manual several times until your use of all controls comes naturally. With regard to cost, the BMW starts around $45,000. However, all regularly scheduled maintenance is included up to 50,000 miles. This means that the only expenses you will incur during that time are likely to be replacement of tires around 30,000 miles. If they are the run flat version, they are not inexpensive.

Below are some specs of the 528i Sedan:

Starting at $44,300 MSRP

3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine

230 horsepower

Rear-wheel drive

27 mpg hwy*
