How much for a BMW 540i?

Whats a good price for a 1999 BMW 540i with 100,000 miles? And is this a good car to buy? Will it last me a few years without any major issues?

You are most likely going to pay around 11,000 more or less depending on the condition of the body. I think it would be a great car to buy if you like power and luxury but dont care about gas mileage. The only major things i have heard that have been recalled on the 1999 540i is the transmission and thats only if you have an automatic. I totally recommend getting a manual so you can feel the power of the almost 300hp 4.4l engine. I Think that if the transmission was wrong the owner would have found out already.

about 14 to 20 grand

depends on the car
For a 99' 540i you should look to pay at least $13,000 and at the most $16,000 this all depends on how well the vehicle is optioned and the overall condition of the vehicle. As for reliability the E39 (this generation of 5 series) is pretty solid, some of the automatic drivers do experience issues however this most issues occur around the 80,000 to 110,000 mile mark so if you clear this area then the issues you will be looking at are general repairs and maintenance. This includes replacing the oxygen sensors, replacing the belts and hoses, and general tune-ups. These jobs run fairly cheap. Things to check on a used BMW especially the E39 are the an inspection of the radiator, and to be sure that none of the warning lights are on. Other than those simple checks a test drive will confirm the true condition of the car. Takeoff should be smooth, and engine response fairly quick, the engine should rev audibly but not overbearingly and without ping and or knock. Another helpful tip is to take the vin number to a dealer and have them print out a detailed work history this will help verify the maintenance of the vehicle, an unmaintained BMW is just a money pit so be weary of unusual wear and tear even on the interior. The interior also one of the best indicators of how well the car was taken care of. A bad interior usually means poor engine maintenance. Other than those areas an E39 holds up both its look and road presence well over the years and should be enjoyable for at least the next 4-6 years depending on how often you and regularly you practice maintenance.
