My 01 BMW X5 owners manual recommends that I should use high octane gasoline. But does it really make a difference especially since I live in Denver, CO where the altitude is 5280ft above sea level. I also know that using higher octane in high altitudereally doesnot make a difference. Besides the price of gas is really expensive.

well the octane rating on engine have to do with the compression ratio of the engine, so i would say go with what the manual says

Your car has a 'knock' sensor on it. If you get an engine light, yu'll know why.
You can try using a lower octane and if you have pinging go higher; you won’t hurt anything trying a couple tanks of lower octane. I think you will find going with the manufactures recommendation will work the best in this case. Going higher than recommended is usually a waste of money though.
